I purchased the following aides:
To find out more about each school, I ordered the ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools. It was $35, and had many dental school statistics, like the number of applicants, the number accepted, how many were in state or out of state, male or female, etc. It also had a 2-page summary of each school.
(If you find my website helpful, please consider purchasing the following books through my site by clicking on the below links. Prices are not increased in any way.
The Ultimate Dental Guide is through the main supplier and the rest are through Amazon.com. Purchases over $25 qualify for free shipping.
I receive a small commission which I use to pay for web hosting fees. Thanks!)
To help me with my application, I purchased the 195-page e-book Ultimate Dental School Admission Guide by Dr. Aly Kanani.
Some of the topics covered in the 2004 2nd Ed. included:
* Career Opportunities
* Specialty Programs
* Preparing for Dental School
* Admission Req'mts for each school
* DAT
* Canadian DAT
*** Application Essays
*** Interviews
*** Scholarships
*** 10 Sample Essays by Accepted Applicants
*** 10 Sample Interview Questions
Some of the info I found online already, however, I purchased the book mainly for the last 5 items. I had no idea where to start with my essay. I found this guide very helpful in writing my essay and in mentally preparing myself for my interviews.
Kaplan - This was my favorite review product. It covered everything in one big book. I also loved the 2 (hardcopy) practice exams and electronic exam on the CD. I thought the science and math sections were reflective of the questions I received on my DAT.
TopScore Pro - I also recommend getting this computerized study aid with 3 full DATs mainly for the PAT and reading sections. The PAT section is quite hard, and it is good to practice seeing it on the computer screen. The same for reading. I found it more difficult to read a 20 paragraph article on the computer. It forced me to prepare differently.
I thought the science questions on this CD were too difficult. They were a lot more in depth than what I had on my exam. If you can answer these with no problem, you'll be good to go.
Schaum's Chemistry Schaum's Biology - I purchased Shaum's outlines for both Biology and Chemistry. Although the guides didn't cost that much, I wish I saved my money. There was so much to read in the Kaplan text (and in easier format), that I barely looked at these Outlines. I bought them only because I had read that it helped other people. Perhaps it did help them, because they claimed to have gotten 23's etc. on their science sections.
